T-Shirt to Yarn Tutorial

Instead of throwing away all those old t-shirts turn them into something useful... Recycle them into rugs, scarves, cowling, pot holders, hot plates.. etc... Below is my easy tutorial to cut and make old t-shirts into yarn.. Coming soon will be the tutoial to make a rug from the t-hsirt yarn. Please read this complete tutorial before beginning this project!

Stay tuned, but for now... Enjoy!

Tools

- T-shirts - 1 shirt = about 26 yards - You'll need as many as it takes for the size of the project you want.

- Rotary tool (easier & faster than scissors & better on your hand if doing a lot)

- Scissors

- Lint Roller

- Large Self Healing Mat - if using only scissors, this is not needed

Tutorial

1 - Cut off Bottom Edge of T-Shirt as close to threads as possible to get the most of your t-shirt.

2 - Try to get yout t-shirt as straight as possible, as shown, before you start to cut.

3 - cut 1" - 1.5" strips about .5" from center, as shown up to the armpit. Put top aside and use as a rag or cut into smaller strips later to add to rug or other project later.

4 - Open up t-shirt as shown

5 - cut diaginal strips from bottom right to top left, as shown. from right side of t-shirt to left.

Opposite End

6 - On opposite end, cut strips evenly across

7 - starting on 1 end pull end of t-shirt while holding part of other end. Continue until the opposite end.

8 - When complete pull again in the opposite direction to ensure that the t-shirt is stretch enough to give you the most length.

Make Yarn into Ball

Continue wrapping around, & turning while wrapping to make round ball.

Tips - Do not cut strips shorter than 1 inch or larger than 1.5 inches., It won't wind right.

- Do NOT cut less than .5 in from the center - you risk cutting it off completely ( I did this.. Ooops)
